Beer Tourism is on Tap in New Orleans

Royal Brewery New Orleans, meanwhile, could not be farther from the beaten path of local tourism. It opened last year by the Industrial Canal in New Orleans East. But this brewery has carefully cultivated a sideline in tours and found people eager to seek them out.

Royal Brewery offers tours by appointment only, and these are usually led by co-founder Raymond Pumilia, a burly, bearded, funny presence who fills the metal building with tales of building a modern beer business from scratch. The tours are pitched and priced as package deals, with beer samples at the tap room and merchandise to bring home.

“We try to package it no different from the way you’d package a swamp tour,” said co-founder Mandy Pumilia. “Because of where we are, it has to be an experience, a destination.”

Scholarships Available for Summer Camp

For the past nine years, Upturn Arts has produced a summer camp for New Orleans children ages 4-12 that focuses on visual arts, music, theater, and dance, with the mission, “Arts for All”.

Past campers Skylar Williams was accepted into the Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s vocal program; Will Wisnesky was accepted into a dance intensive programs with the Orlando Ballet and Nutmeg Conservatory; Jackson Norton was accepted into NOCCA for the 2018-2019 school year

The camp is open to young artists in New Orleans, ages 4-12. creARTive grants are available for those who qualify. Visit for more information. Master artists, such as Tank and the Bangas, David Shaw of the Revivalists, Kristin Diable, and others will visit the camp to mentor young artists in their respective arts background.

The summer camp is organized in six themed sessions beginning the week of June 4. Camp runs through the week of August 6-10.

The themes this year are:

Session 1–Superhero Camp

Session2 – Explore Nola Camp

Session 3–Adventure Camp

Session 4–STEAM Camp

Session 5–Recycle Camp

Session 6–International Camp

**Sessions 1, 2, 4 & 5 are two-week camp sessions.

Upturn Arts is a fun and creative program that teaches children in the New Orleans community to explore and build confidence in themselves as artists. Our mission is to provide “Arts for All”.

A unique feature of Upturn Arts’s summer camp is that young artists have an opportunity to work with Master Artists, such as David Shaw of The Revivalists, Tank and the Bangas, Mike Doussan, and more.

Another bonus of Upturn Arts Summer Camp 2018 is that creARTive grants are available for middle- and low-income families to subsidize the cost of tuition, ensuring the mission, “Arts for All”. Camp begins June 4 with six different themed sessions and ends the week of August 10.

“Due to the nature of our organization, we hope to provide creARTive Grants to at least 50% of the young artists who attend our programming. One of our goals is to engage the immediate neighborhood and directly impact those families that live around our site.” says Executive Director, Dana Reed. Linda P. Melton will be speaking Saturday, May 12 from 1:30-3:30PM at Royal Brewery New Orleans located at 7266 Townsend Place, Building B. Linda’s new book is Douse Me O Lord With Your Presence. Linda is a New Orleanian and cancer survivor who is writing to encourage her readers to get into a position to invest in their lives spiritually.
